  Next month, officials will dedicate the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, crown jewel of the medical city emerging in southeast Orlando. Come spring, the new building for the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine will open there, too.

[excerpt]  Burnham has promised to eventually employ at least 300 scientists and staff, while the medical school expects to have 350 jobs once fully up and running. In addition, the two facilities — combined with the Burnett school, other research operations, a Nemours Children's Hospital and a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital — are projected to attract or generate thousands of additional jobs in coming years.   The median resale price of a home in Central Florida has hovered at a quarter of a million dollars for almost a year.
  A cool quarter of a million dollars. Two hundred and fifty grand. That's roughly what it takes to buy a typical used home in Central Florida these days.

Existing-home sales soared to record heights in 2004-05, taking prices with them: The median resale price of a home in the Orlando area rose more than 60 percent in those two years alone, according to data gathered by the Orlando Regional Realtor Association. [more]
